Braille Translator

Braille represents each letter as a pattern of raised dots in a six-dot cell. This translator converts English text to uncontracted (Grade 1) Braille using the Unicode Braille characters, which display on screen and can be copied, and converts Braille characters back into text.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the Braille used in books and signs?

Most printed English Braille uses Grade 2, with contractions for common words and letter groups. This tool uses Grade 1, letter by letter, which is right for learning and for short labels. For production Braille, use dedicated software such as Liblouis.

Can I print it for a blind reader?

On ordinary paper the dots are flat. Real Braille needs an embosser; the Unicode characters are for screens and learning.
