Add Line Numbers

Numbered lines make it easy to point at a place in a script, a poem, a contract or a code sample. This tool adds numbers with your choice of starting number, separator and zero padding, and can skip blank lines. It also works in reverse, removing the numbers from text copied out of a PDF or a code listing.

How to use Add Line Numbers

1. Paste your text or code.
2. Choose Add line numbers or Remove line numbers.
3. When adding, set the starting number, the separator (1. or 1) or 1:) and whether to pad with zeros or skip empty lines.
4. Copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

Which numbers does "remove" strip?

A number at the very start of a line followed by a dot, bracket, colon, dash or space. Numbers elsewhere in the line are left alone.
