SERP Snippet Preview

Your title and meta description are the first thing people see in search results, and Google cuts them off by width in pixels, not by a fixed number of characters. A title full of wide letters is truncated sooner than one full of narrow ones. This preview measures your text the way the results page draws it and shows you where it will be cut.

How to use SERP Snippet Preview

  1. Type or paste your page title, URL and meta description.
  2. Watch the desktop and mobile previews update as you type.
  3. Check the width bars: green is safe, amber is close to the limit, and red means the text will probably be truncated.
  4. Rewrite until the important words sit comfortably inside the limit, then copy the finished title and description into your page.

When it comes in handy

  • Writing titles and descriptions for new pages and blog posts.
  • Rewriting snippets for pages that get impressions but few clicks.
  • Showing a client how a page will look in search before it goes live.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a title be?
On desktop, Google shows roughly 600 pixels of a title, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Because the limit is in pixels, the preview measures the actual width of your text instead of counting characters.
Will Google always use my title and description?
Not always. Google may rewrite a title or pick a different snippet from the page if it thinks that matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description make that less likely.
Is the preview exact?
It is a close approximation. Google changes its layout and fonts from time to time, and the width available depends on the device, so treat the limits as a guide.
