DNS Leak Test

Check whether your VPN or proxy leaks your DNS lookups to your internet provider. See which DNS servers you really use.

Turn on your VPN (or proxy) first, then run the test. It takes about 10 seconds.

Your browser looks up ten random names under a test domain run by bash.ws, which records which DNS servers asked for them. The test sees your public IP address; nothing else is collected by SEOpeck.

DNS Leak Test

Every time you open a website, your device first asks a DNS server for its address. With a VPN, those questions should go through the VPN too. If they go to your internet provider instead (a DNS leak), your provider can see every site you visit even though the VPN hides your traffic. This test makes your browser look up ten random names on a test domain and reports which DNS servers asked for them, with their country and network, and your public IP address.

How to use DNS Leak Test

  1. Connect your VPN or proxy.
  2. Click Start DNS leak test.
  3. Look at the DNS servers found: they should belong to your VPN (or the public DNS you chose), not to your internet provider.
  4. If they belong to your provider, turn on your VPN's DNS leak protection and test again.

When it comes in handy

  • Checking that a VPN really protects your browsing.
  • Finding out which DNS resolver your network uses.
  • Checking that encrypted DNS (DNS over HTTPS) is working in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a DNS leak?
Turn on "DNS leak protection" or "use VPN DNS" in your VPN app, turn off IPv6 if your VPN does not support it, and consider enabling secure DNS (DNS over HTTPS) in your browser settings.
Is it bad to see Google or Cloudflare DNS?
Not if you chose them. It only matters that the servers are not your internet provider's when you are trying to hide your browsing from it.
Who runs the test?
The lookups are answered by bash.ws, a free DNS leak test service. It sees your IP address and the DNS servers, which is how the test works; SEOpeck does not store anything.
