Fuel Consumption Converter

Europe measures fuel use in litres per 100 km (lower is better), South Asia and Japan in kilometres per litre, and the US and UK in miles per gallon (higher is better) with different gallons. Because L/100 km is the inverse of the others, you cannot convert it with a single multiplier; this converter handles both directions correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is UK mpg higher than US mpg for the same car?

The imperial gallon (4.546 L) is about 20% bigger than the US gallon (3.785 L), so a car goes further on one.

Why do some people prefer L/100 km?

Fuel used is proportional to L/100 km, so savings add up directly. Going from 10 to 5 L/100 km saves as much fuel over 100 km as going from 20 to 10.
